Your Website Isn't Finished When It's Built.

Your Website Isn't Finished When It's Built.

July 7, 2026

Built your own site with AI tools like Lovable or Vercel or any other website builder? Here's why maintaining it matters more than building it, and what happens if you skip it.

You typed a few prompts, watched it generate, and within an hour you had a working site. It looks decent.

It's live. Job done, right?

Not quite. A website isn't a one off project like painting a wall. It's more like a van or a shopfront. It needs regular checks, or it starts to break down. Plumbers, electricians, hairdressers, cafés, builders, accountants, any small business that used an AI tool to build its own site can run into the same problem. You launch it, then walk away. That's usually where the trouble starts.

Building It Yourself Is the Easy Part

AI website builders have made it possible for anyone to describe what they want and get a working site in minutes, no developer needed. That's genuinely useful. But easy to build doesn't mean easy to run forever. These tools are built for speed, not long term upkeep, and once your site is live, it needs a few things kept up:

  • Software and dependency updates. The code an AI tool generates still relies on frameworks, libraries, and databases behind the scenes. Skip updates and you leave doors open for security holes.
  • Backups. A copy of your site and its data saved somewhere safe, in case something breaks or gets hacked.
  • Security checks. AI generated code can quietly ship with exposed settings, weak login handling, or unprotected data if nobody reviews it after launch.
  • Content updates. Old opening hours, old prices, or an out of date phone number make you look closed for business.

None of this is glamorous. Many business owners don't think about it until something goes wrong.

What Happens When You Skip Maintenance

Here's the part that catches people out. A neglected website doesn't just look a bit tired. It becomes a real risk to your business.

  • Unreviewed code is an easy target. Sites built quickly with AI prompts often go live without anyone checking for exposed data or weak security settings. That gap doesn't fix itself.
  • Recovery is expensive. Cleaning up a hacked site, restoring backups, and rebuilding lost search rankings can take months, not days.
  • Customers notice broken things first. A slow site, a dead contact form, or a page that won't load costs you the booking before the customer even calls.
  • Search rankings slide. Google favours sites that are kept current. A site left untouched for a year or two quietly drops down the results, even if nothing "broke."

Common Mistakes Small Business Owners Make

  • Treating the launch as the finish line. The site goes live, then nobody logs in again for a year.
  • Never getting the generated code reviewed. AI tools can produce a working site fast, but a security check before and after launch is a separate step many owners skip entirely.
  • No backup plan. If the site goes down, there's nothing to restore from.
  • Using the same password everywhere. One leaked password on another site can hand over access to yours.
  • Not checking the site on mobile. Most customers browse on their phone. If it looks broken there, they leave.
  • Assuming it still loads means it's fine. A site can look fine to you and still be unsafe or ranking badly.

What Maintaining a Website Actually Involves

You don't need to become a web developer. You need a routine. As a rough guide:

Weekly

  • Check the site loads properly on desktop and mobile
  • Test your contact form or booking system
  • Check for any security warnings from your builder or host

Monthly

  • Check for platform or dependency updates
  • Update content: hours, prices, offers, photos
  • Confirm a backup exists and actually works

As needed

  • Fix broken links
  • Respond to reviews
  • Refresh old photos or outdated service details

If that list already feels like more time than you have spare, that's the point. Maintenance takes hours you probably don't have, and most owners quietly give up on it within months of launch. That's exactly when problems start.

What to Consider: A Simple Checklist

Before deciding whether to keep maintaining your site yourself, ask:

  • Do I know how to restore my site from a backup if it goes down?
  • Has the code been reviewed for security since it was generated?
  • Would I notice if my site got hacked?
  • Is my content (hours, prices, services) still accurate?
  • Do I have 1 to 2 hours a month to spend on this, consistently?
  • Does my site have an SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser bar)?

If you answered no or not sure to two or more of these, your site is at risk. Not because you built it badly, but because building and maintaining are two different things entirely.

Building It Was Step One

Getting your website online yourself, with an AI tool, is a real achievement. But the businesses that do well online are the ones with the functional and simple website and not just flashy ones.

You don't have to do this alone, and you don't have to hire a full agency either.

Solverdeck offers a free website review. We'll check your site's security, updates, and performance, and tell you plainly what needs attention. Book a free website review to find out where your site stands.
